By George Patterson, Kindred Trails. We build first Turkey trips around Istanbul plus one more region, and we keep moves to one or two. You need old city days, one Bosphorus window and a domestic flight plan that leaves buffer time.
In 2026 we plan 7 to 10 day trips at 2600 to 4800 dollars per person including international flights. You will enjoy more when guides handle the Grand Bazaar, mosques and transit on day one. We use the checklist below for first visits.
Shape the route and pace
Turkey rewards a slower pace, so we limit the route to Istanbul plus Cappadocia or the Aegean coast. You should allow 3 full days for Istanbul and 2 to 3 days for the second stop. We avoid same day international to domestic connections under 3 hours.
- Pick Istanbul plus Cappadocia for caves and balloons.
- Pick Istanbul plus Bodrum or Antalya for coast rest.
- Keep hotel moves to two for 7 days and three for 10 days.
- Leave one open afternoon in each stop for rest.
- Book domestic flights as morning departures.
We map walking loads before we book hotels, since old city hills add up. You will walk 8 to 12 km on full Istanbul days. We place rest hours after lunch on those days.
Book stays, flights and guides
Guides change Istanbul from crowded to clear, so we book private guiding for the first two days. You should stay near Sultanahmet for history or Karakoy for food and ferries. We book boutique hotels at 120 to 260 dollars per night in 2026.
- Book international flights 5 to 7 months ahead for 2026.
- Hold old city hotel with elevator and breakfast included.
- Add a half day Bosphorus cruise at 40 to 90 dollars.
- Book Cappadocia cave hotel 4 to 6 months ahead.
- Reserve balloon seats at 220 to 320 dollars with a backup morning.
We confirm pickup names, domestic ticket numbers and guide phones in one sheet. You will move faster when every leg shows a name and a time. We reconfirm balloons the evening before for wind calls.
Handle food, money and daily timing
Turkish meals run long and portions run generous, so we pace one big meal per day. You should carry 100 to 200 dollars in lira for markets, tips and small cafes. We budget 25 to 55 dollars per person per day for food outside hotels.
- Eat one full kebab or seafood dinner and keep lunch light.
- Drink water with meals and confirm tea and coffee prices on menus.
- Use cards in hotels and cash in bazaars and taxis.
- Start mosques early at 8 to 9 am to avoid tour peaks.
- Plan bazaar visits on weekday mornings for calmer aisles.
We list three lunch backups near each sightseeing block. You will eat better when a tired group has a short walk to food. We keep an evening free for a hammam at 60 to 120 dollars.
Pack for mosques, coast and caves
Dress codes and terrain vary by stop, so we pack layers and cover options. You should carry a scarf, long trousers and socks for mosque entries. We pack trail shoes with grip for Cappadocia valleys and old city stone.
- Pack a scarf and modest cover for mosque visits.
- Bring layers for 10 to 18 degree swings in Cappadocia.
- Add swimwear and sandals only for coast stops.
- Carry a daypack, refill bottle and sun hat.
- Pack blister care for long stone street days.
We check baggage rules for domestic legs, where limits run 15 to 20 kg. You will avoid fees when bags are weighed before the airport. We keep medicines and documents in daypacks during moves.
Close documents and arrival steps
Entry, insurance and arrival transport should be settled before takeoff. You should verify entry rules, e visa status and passport validity for 2026. We book private airport transfers at 40 to 80 dollars per car in Istanbul.
- Verify passport validity and entry form needs for 2026.
- Save hotel addresses in Turkish for taxi drivers.
- Set phone data with eSIM or airport SIM steps.
- Confirm late checkout or day rooms for night flights.
- Share the full itinerary with one contact at home.
We send an arrival card with transfer name, hotel phone and guide time. You will clear the airport faster with that page on your phone. We stay available on arrival day for delays or gate changes.
